Aussie Pub Guide Home

Find a pub in Australia!

Australia is the continent Down Under, and has many fanciful stories attached to it.  It is home to some of the greatest natural wonders on this planet, like the Great Barrier Reef, but Australia is also home to a huge number of pubs and bars, some of which are quite famous worldwide.  The Australians, it seems love their drink and will spare no efforts to find it.  Australians consume nearly five times the amount of beer as any other country, and this love for the golden liquid is aptly represented through its numerous pubs and bars.  The typical image is that of the brawny, sun browned Australian sprawled in dimly lit pub, clutching a can of chilled beer, as if it were God’s own elixir!!! Although the same relaxed Australians can become aggressive if they consume too much of this special elixir which is why its reccomended to get some travel insurance in Australia if you are planning on visiting an spending a lot of time in the pub!  Most of the pubs and bars are located in the urban centres of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth.  Most of them also combine hospitality with gambling facilities. At the last estimate there were more than 2000 such establishments throughout Australia.

Australia is also home to many country pubs, barring the ones found in the urban centers of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth.  These country pubs have broad verandahs, and inside are dimly lit and cool.  You are likely to find the local populace sprawled inside and smoking, with a glass of their favourite brew in hand!  These are also good places to meet people, catch up with local history, and eat good Australian home food.  The beer served in the pubs is mostly lager, and was till recently dominated by the big boy brewers like Foster’s and Lion Nathan.  Boutique beers are now becoming popular and many microbreweries are steadily gaining a share of the beer market.

Broadly Australia can be divided into five areas that have the best country pubs and bars.  They are:

  • Sydney
  • South East Queensland
  • Melbourne
  • Perth
  • Adelaide

Australia’s nightlife is divided into restaurants, pubs, bars, nightclubs, and dance clubs.  The cities have numerous establishments of all these types.  Some of the establishments have different levels such that each of these “nightlife” experiences are represented.
